PURPOSE:
The Staten Island Connected Care CCBHC is comprised of several community-based programs providing direct care to over 1500 clients annually, both on-site and in the community. The Learning Specialist 1, under the direction of the Senior Learning Specialist, will provide change management support, training, and consultation to staff working with people with mental health, substance use, psychosocial and intellectual/developmental challenges in community-based, day, residential, and child welfare systems of care.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Learning Specialist 1 (LS1), with the Learning Department team, will help the agency to plan and implement changes in policy, procedures, and practice, and will support the agency in implementation and integration of mission and strategic plan. The LS1 will curate external training resources, develop customized training materials, and execute plans for sustaining practice and evaluating training. The LS1 will also participate in all Learning Department endeavors.
The Learning Specialist 1 is the entry level Learning Specialist role, with movement up to Learning Specialist 2 available. The LS 1 is expected to immediately create and deliver introductory learning curricula in a few relevant areas with little department support. The LS1 will be supported to develop knowledge and skills toward the creation and delivery of more advanced learning packages focused on specialized content areas and more than one evidence-based/informed model.
KEY ESSENTION FUNCTIONS:
Training
a. Research, assess, and curate external training resources to be utilized in meeting program staff development needs
b. Create and deliver introductory training relevant to behavioral health and social services including agency values, workplace expectations, client engagement, and assessment
c. Further develop knowledge and expertise toward creating and delivering advanced training packages in family engagement and treatment, trauma informed care, recovery-oriented practice, substance use, culturally affirming care, LGBTQ competencies, documentation, risk management, crisis de-escalation, and/or health literacy
d. Create and deliver evidence-based training packages to teams and/or individuals (within Jewish Board and across the larger social service/behavioral health community) in at least one intervention area such as:
i. Motivational Interviewing (MI); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT); Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT); Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP); Brief Therapy; Shared Decision Making; and other relevant and emerging evidence-based practices
ii. Further develop knowledge and expertise toward delivering evidence-based training in a second intervention area
e. Create and deliver training packages in other areas relevant to schools, care management, child welfare and behavioral health services
2. Case, Team, and System Consultations
a. Provide clinical and system consultations to support competency and ensure integration of training into daily agency practice, with a focus on site-based supervisory development and practice improvement strategies, including sustainability planning, outcomes monitoring, and quality improvement support
b. Assist in the development of program or division model of care and deliver training and consultation supporting model of care implementation, sustainability, and the monitoring and use of outcomes
3. Development of Materials
a. Create training tool kits and fact sheets to support centralized and site-based learning
b. Contribute to webinar creation
4. Participation in other Learning Department endeavors such as
a. Training evaluation
b. Crisis consultation and intervention
CORE COMPETANCIES:
• Training and Development: Research, assess, and curate external training resources; create and deliver introductory and advanced training packages in areas such as family engagement, trauma-informed care, and culturally affirming care; deliver evidence-based training in intervention areas like Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
• Consultation and Support: Provide clinical and system consultations to support competency and integration of training into daily practice; assist in developing program models of care and deliver training to support model implementation and sustainability.
• Material Development: Create training tool kits and fact sheets; contribute to webinar creation and other Learning Department endeavors such as training evaluation and crisis consultation.
• Educational and Training Requirements: Bachelor's or master’s in psychology, Social Work, or a related field preferred; minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience; demonstrated evidence of excellent training skills and experience in evidence-based practice; knowledge and skills in cultural competency training required.
• Experience and Language Preference: Minimum of 2-4 years of relevant experience; supervisory and training experience in behavioral health interventions is a plus; fluency in Spanish is useful.
EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
• Bachelor’s and/or Master’s, in psychology, Social Work or a related field preferred with a minimum of 2 years of relatable work experience OR High School Degree with a minimum of 2-4 years of experience in a not-for-profit setting
• Demonstrated evidence of excellent training skills
• Experience in evidence-based practice with at least one treatment. Supervisory and training experience in above interventions a plus.
• Availability to work during set Jewish Board training times and travel to training sites necessary, along with capacity to train within The Jewish Board standards
• Knowledge and skills in the area of cultural competency training is required
• Strong verbal communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the agency
• Organized with an ability to work independently to complete projects
• Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
• Skilled decision-maker and project manager that works proactively in an outcome-focused environment
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/LANGUAGE PREFERRED:
• A minimum of 2-4 years of relevant experience is required
• Two years in the supervision of behavioral health staff or project management preferred
• License to practice preferred
• Fluency in Spanish is useful
COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Excellent skills with relevant software and technology including PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Word
WORK ENVIRONE/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Travel to multiple program sites throughout the 5 boroughs and Westchester County is required
• Noise level is consistent with levels usually present in an office, education, rehabilitation, industrial, workshop or health related environment
• Hazards presents are consistent with those common to an office, education, rehabilitation, industrial, workshop or health related environment
• The work environment involves no physical risk or hazardous conditions
• To perform the essential functions of this job, the candidate is routinely required to sit (70% of the time) and stand (30% of the time)
