Lorraine, Sr. Direct Support Professional

Learn why Lorraine sees her work as part of a team effort to help families in crisis.

Lorraine is a Sr. Direct Support Professional with our Horizons Domestic Violence Shelter, where she supports families during crisis, putting them on a path to healing and more permanent housing since she started with us in 1999.

What does your role mean to you?

I do this work to help our residents, because you never know—one day, you could be in a similar situation, and they might be the ones helping you. That’s why I always strive to be respectful, kind, and courteous.

What is your favorite part of the work you do?

The best part of my job is seeing the families move to their new permanent home. Before this role, I also worked with our residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and I really enjoyed my time with them. I would help take them on trips, administer medications, and assist with ADL (Activities of Daily Living) skills. Watching them accomplish their goals was incredibly rewarding—not just for me, but for them as well.

What song or album do you listen to when you need a burst of energy?

My favorite music is gospel—Rance Allen, to be precise—and I especially love the song “Something About the Name Jesus” featuring Kirk Franklin.
