Lisa, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Learn Lisa's favorite part of the job and why treating every person with dignity is important.
What is your average day like at The Jewish Board?
I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who is part of a team-approach program, Bronx Youth ACT, which helps children and adolescents who are at particularly high risk of being hospitalized or needing a higher level of care. As a community-based program that typically sees clients during the day, I start my day by collaborating with the other team members, sharing updates, and comparing scheduled visits for our clients before heading out to our in-person client visits. I will then often go to clients’ schools or homes, meeting with clients and their caregivers to discuss their psychiatric treatment plans and general treatment goals and follow up on any medication issues.
I also spend a lot of time supporting families with all challenges medication-related. Medication side effects, insurance/pharmacy red tape, as well as various challenges that surround taking medication consistently are all regular issues that arise throughout my day.
What is your favorite part about your work?
Being a mental health professional who shows people, sometimes for the first time, that their experience is paramount and that this is about working together to enhance their lives. I also love the collaborative aspects of this position and how, through multidisciplinary teamwork, we can see the full picture of the child’s life.
Why do you think our value of “Treat Every Person with Dignity” is so important?
Every individual, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances, deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. Recognizing and affirming the inherent worth and value of each person we work with fosters a person-centered approach to providing care, creating an environment where clients and their caregivers feel safe, heard, and valued. Treating every person with dignity lays the groundwork for building meaningful connections with clients and their caregivers, fostering trust, and, ultimately, improving mental health outcomes for all individuals.
What do you do when you need a burst of energy?
I love to do yoga and meditate – both help me feel grounded while also giving me the energy to tackle any challenges that may arise.
