Meet Our Staff

Rivka, LCSW

Learn why Rivka, a social worker at The Seymour Askin Clinic in Midwood, Brooklyn, chose this profession, and what inspires her daily.

What made you want to become a social worker?

I always knew that I wanted to work with people in a meaningful way. I was drawn to social work because of the multifaceted ways I could use my skills to reach those in need and make an impact. Being a social worker is more than a day job: it is a mission.

What’s an average day like for you at The Jewish Board?

There is no average day for me at The Jewish Board! Each one is unique, challenging, stimulating, and dynamic. My days are a blend of clinical and administrative work, supporting my team at Jewish Community Services, creating partnerships, building programming, and engaging Jewish communal institutions.

What’s your favorite part about the work you do?

Knowing how many lives we touch by the work we do inspires me daily. I am humbled to have had the opportunity to train and nurture countless therapists and supervisors, to grow and develop professionally, and to create programs that reach so many vulnerable populations. For me, just changing the life of one person is enough, and we get to do that every day.

Which of The Jewish Board’s core Values resonates with you most?

I resonate most with our value to ‘treat every person with dignity’, to see the humanity and light in each person, to have humility in all interactions, and to ensure that every person has the same opportunity to heal and grow.

You spend so much time caring for others; what’s one way you practice self-care?

I took up boxing a few years ago and find it the best antidote to compassion fatigue; Boxing has taught me to stay calm, breathe, move with intention, find my inner strength, and let out what doesn’t serve me.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Aluf Ha’olam, by Hanan Ben Ari. It is Hebrew for “ World Champion.” This song is about finding the champion within, who gets back up and grows strong with each fall, who chooses life each day, who knows that victory is much sweeter after loss. It is both my personal and professional theme song!
