Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions; that’s completely natural.

Whether you’re new to online counseling or just new to The Jewish Board, we want to make it easy to understand how our services work. Below you’ll find answers to the questions we hear most often about online therapy, costs, privacy, and what to expect.

What is online therapy, and how does it work?

Online therapy lets you meet with a licensed therapist through secure video or phone sessions. You’ll talk about what’s going on in your life, learn coping tools, and get professional support, all from the comfort of your home or anywhere in New York State.

What makes The Jewish Board different from other online therapy options?

We’re a New York-based nonprofit, not a tech company. That means we focus on affordable, evidence-based, and culturally aware care — not subscriptions or sales. Our goal is your well-being, not making money for Wall Street.

Who are the therapists at The Jewish Board?

Our therapists are licensed mental health professionals — including social workers, psychologists, and counselors — who work in New York. They’re experienced, compassionate, and trained to help with many kinds of emotional and life challenges.

When you reach out, a specialist helps match you with the therapist who best fits your needs, not a computer algorithm.

Do I have to be Jewish to get therapy with you? Are the therapists all Jewish?

Not at all – we serve people of every background, faith, and identity. Our therapists come from many different cultures and traditions; some Jewish, some not. What they all share is deep compassion, professional training, and a commitment to helping New Yorkers feel better and live healthier lives.

Our name reflects our roots in the Jewish community stemming from our founding in 1874, but today our goal is broader: to make high-quality, affordable mental-health care available to everyone in New York State.

What is “evidence-based care”?

“Evidence-based care” means your therapist uses methods that have been proven to work through research and clinical results. At The Jewish Board, this includes approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other well-established treatments. These methods help you understand patterns, build new skills, and make real progress toward feeling better.

Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?

Yes. We accept most insurance plans and Medicaid, and we offer a sliding-scale fee (see our sliding fee scale) for people without coverage. No one is turned away because they can’t pay.

When you contact us, we’ll explain your options before your first session.

How soon can I start?

Once you reach out to our OneCall intake team, we’ll usually match you with a therapist within a few days. Appointments are available during the day, in the evening, and on weekends.

Can I see the same therapist every week?

Yes. You’ll have ongoing sessions with the same therapist, so you can build a trusting relationship over time. If your needs change, we’ll help you adjust or connect with another therapist who’s a better fit.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For most people, yes. Studies show that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions for things like anxiety, depression, and stress management. You get the same care — with added convenience and privacy.

What kinds of issues can you help with?

Our therapists support adults, teens, and families dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, relationship challenges, parenting, trauma, and life transitions.

If you’re not sure whether we can help, just reach out. We’ll guide you to the right kind of support.

What if I prefer in-person therapy later?

No problem. You can start online and move to in-person sessions at one of our counseling centers in New York City. We have clinics and offices across the five boroughs.

How can I be sure that my information is private?

We use a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform, which means your sessions and personal information are fully secure and confidential (learn more about MyAvatar).
